About Tom Tom Sat Navs (free with mobile phone deals)

Tom Tom is a currently a leading brand in the Satellite Navigation market and produces many Sat Nav models. Tom Tom not only do car navigation but also a series of products for bike navigation and personal navigation from a PDA or mobile.

Car Navigation

Car navigation was Tom Tom’s first product and is a little box and screen no bigger than two matchboxes. The ‘classic’ model gives us a good idea of what satellite navigation is about.

ONE Classic Regional V4

This sat nav comes with pre-loaded maps of the region you live in. You can download extra maps from the Tom Tom website at additional cost. Another stable feature of Tom Tom sat navs is the ‘safety camera alert’ feature which warns the driver when he or she is coming up to a speed or safety camera which enables them to reduce their speed. All Tom Tom sat navs are designed for ease of use and all have the ‘touch and go’ feature. This is exactly what it says it does, you plug in the sat nav, touch the screen and go! There’s no complicated setup with any of the Tom Tom sat navs, they are ready to use out of the box. The Tom Tom ONE Classic also has traffic update features so the latest traffic news is yours instantly when you’re driving. This can enable you to change your route so you don’t waste precious time sitting in traffic. The Tom Tom ONE Classic is RRP at £129.99 which is currently the cheapest price for a sat nav produced by Tom Tom and bought new.

GO 940 Live

The latest machine from Tom Tom is the GO 940 Live. It is retailed at £349.99 and does everything you could possibly want from a sat nav and more. It is the most up to date sat nav yet. Some of the quirkier features of the GO 940 Live include the ‘fuel price’ feature which tells you what the fuel price is at fuel garages in your vincinity. The GO 940 Live also lists places in the area you are in that are ‘of interest’ this includes fuel garages and hotels and restaraunts which can be helpful if you’re looking for a place to stay. Another special feature that the GO 940 Live has is  the ‘fast route re-calculation’. This means that if you deviate from the route stated by the GO 940 Live then it won’t start disagreeing with you, it will simply recalculate your route in the direction you are going in an instant, for quick and easy driving. One of the problems reported with the original Tom Tom sat navs was that they lost their signal in tunnels or in cloudy weather. This problem has been overcome by a feature known as ‘enhanced positioning technology’ a fancy name for a simple concept. Basically this means that the GO 940 Live will get uninterrupted signal in all weathers and tunnels. Some consumers did report that with the orginal Tom Tom’s and since then, that even though the sat navs were accurate in giving road numbers, they weren’t so good at giving out road names, which when your driving, are often easier to spot than a string on numbers. The GO 940 Live overcomes this problem by giving both the road name and number in its spoken instructions. The GO 940 Live also includes a MP3 and MP4 feature although not much detail is given on this. It is considered widely acceptable to listen to MP3 music files whilst driving but not so much to watch MP4 (movie) files. This poses the question as to why Tom Tom felt it was necessary to add an MP4 feature although I suppose it could be useful if you fancy watching a movie whilst on a driving break.
